John T. William's

I just watched the dash camera video of John T. William's shotting. All I can say is WTF (where the fire which may not make since but I do not like to swear). I was originally going to blog about the excessive force the police used against protesters and then I saw to video. Oh my goodness. I do believe that there was so much excessiveness that I cannot even describe it. I remember going every week to Pike Place and seeing John carve. My mom who works for Seattle Parks and Recreation remembers having to clean up the shavings from his wood carving. Another part of my knowing or John is that my mom's ex-boyfriend is from the same tribe as him. I remember as a child going to the reservation up in Canada and eating his mom's homemade blackberry pie and freshly BBQ'd seal meat. That was the good times. I also remember fishing up there and eating it fresh. I am so astonished at how brutal our police has become. Please tell me how you all feel about this.

  1. We are all connected in a way. It is tragic what happened to John and it is also symbolic. To remind us that nothing has really changed except the tactics to keep us on the path of oppression. I'm sorry to hear about his death and also I am grateful to know that someone in the English class I went to knew this man. It hurts my heart to think of what happened. At the same time it angers me. Because I have experienced harrassment from cops and so has my family. I don't trust cops. I have been no saint in my life but neither have law enforcement. Its a shame how this happened. To me it dont matter if that cop was native, black, white, asain, hispanic, etc... that person should be charged for murder. A police officer cannot get away with murder, because then this will cause tension in the future. Society knows whats right. Ian Birk knows whats right and he was in the wrong. He should admit he was wrong.

  2. Reading your posts made me go back and watch the video from Officer Burke's patrol car of the shooting. That video is scary, you see Mr Williams just crossing the street- minding his own business, the cop gets out of the car and calls for him to drop the knife and within seconds you hear shots fired off camera. It looks like the officer is the one who starts it, as the only time we see Mr Williams he is just walking and not threatening anyone.

It is good to hear your other experiences with Mr Williams, Bridgette. Amazing how one person can affect so many lives.

Kohl, I think I can see where you are coming from, however much another person can anyways. I think of your brother and hope he gets justice soon.
